In many parts of the country, the volunteer fire service struggles to retain and recruit candidates to fill their ranks. In this
two-part live presentation, Chief John Buckman takes a look at the issue and gives solutions that he has seen work across
the country.

In section one, Chief Buckman looks at the issues and potential solutions to retain volunteers. He looks at the expectations
of the volunteers, the public, and the leadership. He delves into motivational techniques to keep the volunteers and asks
the question, “Why do volunteers stay?”
In section two, Chief Buckman looks at the challenges of recruiting volunteers. He discusses hiring for attitude and then
looks at recruiting plans and diversity in the service.

Limited staffing is never ideal, but it is a reality for much of the fire service. When faced with limited staffing on the fireground, it is crucial to understand the tactics that are available to you and how to keep your firefighters safe when implementing those tactics.
In this live presentation, Chief John Buckman III walks us through his operational checklist and size-up. Buckman discusses being outgunned on the fireground and the important role of command during these incidents.
It’s important to understand the limitations as well as the tactics that these situations call for.

 

John M. Buckman III is a former fire chief, national organization leader, author, trainer, and professional photographer. He is the director of government and regional outreach for IamResponding.com and the education coordinator for the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section. He has published eight books, authored more than 200 articles, and presented programs in all 50 states, each province of Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Beijing, China.
He served as president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs from 2001–2002 and cofounded the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section of the National Fire Academy Alumni Association.

David Fornell is the Deputy Fire Commissioner for the City of Detroit, MI. Fornell has served as chief of the Westchester, Illinois Fire Department, a suburb of Chicago, as well as a company officer for Casstown Community Fire Department, Casstown, OH, and the Beckerle & Company, Hose Company, Engine #9 of the Danbury, Connecticut Fire Department. He is the author of Fire Stream Management Handbook published by Fire Engineering.

First responders are always there to help others. It’s important that they remember to help themselves. With a growing wave of evidence that indicates that firefighters are at more risk than the general public to cancer, it’s imperative that they do all they can to mitigate the risks. In this video, Rick Madsen walks the viewer through the research as well as his process for developing policies and procedures to help manage those risks.

Madsen discusses the various places that contamination can occur and the issues that can be faced when implementing cancer-reduction procedures.
